How to convert a Lamp Finial into a Lamp/Ceiling Fan Pull
I recently purchased an item from a national building supply retailer that indicated that it was for use as both a Lamp Finial (the decorative thing that goes on top of a table lamp and holds the lamp shade on) and a pull for a ceiling fan. I opened it but couldn’t figure out how to use it as a Ceiling Fan Pull. I called the company’s 800 number listed on the back of the package, only to find out that the package had been mis-labeled and that the item could only be used as a Lamp Finial.
The item sat for a few days on my desk. I searched the internet looking for a screw with a hole in the middle of it that would go into the threaded hole and hold a pull chain, but couldn’t find the right size. In my idle tweaking of things on my desk, I somehow got to a place where I was putting a zip-tie into the threaded end of the Finial, and realized that it would do the trick.
Items you’ll need:
-Ceiling fan pull chain with clips on both ends
-1/8″ drill bit & small drill
-Vice Grip
-A finial
-A zip tie (or 3) that has a small clip end that will thread into the end of the finial
First, put the zip tie into the vice grips …..
…and drill out the clip
Then, thread the chain with the chain clip through the zip tie clip.
And screw the zip tie clip into the finial
Continue turning the clip in the finial thread until the tie breaks off. It should be pretty much flush with the edge of top of the finial.
And now you have a pull for a ceiling fan or light switch!
